But the days between now and gate-opening look different than they did in 2023. The waterfront has more to do on a Thursday. Vista Field finally has a restaurant. Downtown has a working pub scene. The resident's map of late-August Kennewick is not the map the search engines are still showing you.

The Port of Kennewick's waterfront project on East Columbia Drive is no longer a two-winery experiment. As of this summer, the Wine & Artisan Village houses Monarcha Winery at 421 E. Columbia Drive, Wheat Head on the Water at 313 E. Columbia Gardens Way, and Brandi Dayton Art at 313 E. Columbia Gardens Way #110, alongside Bartholomew, Gordon Estate, Cave B, and Muret-Gaston. Brandi Dayton Art opened its gallery and art space in 2026, which is the piece most residents have not registered yet. You can walk from a tasting flight to an exhibit opening in under two minutes.
The Food Truck Plaza is where the weekly rhythm actually happens. The current standing lineup:

Cuba Libre joined the plaza with a December 2 grand opening, serving Cuban croquettes, Cuban stew, and the Cuban sandwich. If you have not been down since the plaza was three trucks and a picnic table, it is worth another look. The Port has scheduled events at Columbia Gardens on August 6 and August 13, both at 325 E. Columbia Gardens Way, which is the practical answer to "what are we doing Thursday."
One detail that matters if you are bringing out-of-town family: the waterfront trail here connects to the broader Sacagawea Heritage Trail, which runs 23 miles along the river. You can eat a Swampy's tri-tip sandwich, walk half a mile of shoreline, and be back for a Bartholomew pour without moving your car.
For years, Vista Field was the parcel everyone in Kennewick could describe by what it wasn't. The old airfield. The future town center. The place where the master plan was more famous than any actual building.
That changed this summer. KUKI Izakaya opened as Vista Field's first restaurant, with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting on Tuesday, June 30 at 10:30 a.m. An izakaya is a Japanese-style pub, small plates and drinks meant for lingering, and its arrival gives residents a concrete reason to point at Vista Field instead of past it. If you have been driving by the site for two years wondering when something would open, that something is here.
The other quiet shift is in Historic Downtown. Blackthorne Neighborhood Pub on West Kennewick Avenue serves English pub fare, including cheesy garlic naan, tea sandwiches, and sausage rolls, and it now anchors a small cluster of downtown food and coffee spots that actually keep evening hours. Blossom Coffee Shop at 20 N Benton St handles the morning side of the same block. The Historic Downtown Kennewick Partnership board meets Wednesday, August 5 at 5:30 p.m., which is one of those civic details that only matters if you live here and want to know who is planning what happens next on your street.

Two years ago, a Kennewick August was Fair week and a lot of same-restaurant repetition around it. Now the week before the Fair has its own gravity. Columbia Gardens gives you a walkable outdoor evening with rotating food and eight-plus tasting rooms in one loop. Vista Field is finally an address you meet friends at rather than a construction fence you drive past. Downtown has both a pub and a coffee shop keeping the block awake at both ends of the day. Casa de los Chilaquiles and Golf Universe's Canyon Lakes rebuild both landed inside the last twelve months.
If you are a homeowner along Clearwater, Gage, or south of Highway 240, the practical effect is that your late-summer weekend has more short-drive options than it used to. If you have friends visiting for the Fair, you no longer need to fill the pre-Fair days with a trip to Walla Walla. The itinerary lives inside city limits.
